Hello lovelies! Today I am going to be reviewing The Potion Diaries by Amy Alward and giving you my first impressions of the second book The Potion Diaries: Royal Tour. First of all I'd like to thank the lovely Josephina Bond for sending me these wonderful books so I can share my thoughts with you all.
When the Princess Of Nova accidentally poisons herself with a love potion meant for her crush, she falls crown-over-heels in love with her own reflection. Oops. A nationwide hunt is called to find the cure, with competitors travelling the world for the rarest ingredients, deep in magical forests and frozen tundras, facing death at every turn.
Enter Samantha Kemi- an ordinary girl with an extraordinary talent. Sam's family were once the most respected alchemists in the kingdom, but they've fallen on hard times, and winning the hunt would save their reputation. But can Sam really compete with the dazzling powers of the ZoroAster megapharma company? And just how close is she willing to get to Zain Aster, her dashing enemy, in the meantime?
Just to add to the pressure, this quest is all over social media. And the world news. No big deal, then.
When I first heard about this book it was described to me as "The Hunger Games meets The Princess Diaries" and they are two of my favourite book series! I do not see that this is completely true however there is definitely a resemblance. Especially because this book is full of adventure, mystery, romance AND MAGIC!!! The perfect mixture of genres for any age! I would personally recommend this for my teenage friends and younger but I really do think anyone could enjoy this book.
I really grew to love the main character, Samantha, I felt as if I went on a journey with her as she grew as a person. I loved that it was mainly from her perspective as I could know how she was feeling and what she was thinking. I also liked the few chapters that were from Princess Evelyn's perspective as they were extremely entertaining even though I disliked her character. Amy did a great job on creating such an annoying character like Evelyn and I think her chapters were written very cleverly. I enjoyed reading about Samantha and learning about her relationship with her friends and family. I also liked the constant updates on the Potion ingredients along with a description of what they are used for. I really felt as if I was learning a lot, which was very enjoyable.
Now, as I'm sure we all know, most (if not all) books have some sort of romance aspect to it and The Potion Diaries is no exception. I usually get sick of romance novels fairly quickly but because this book is full of excitement and adventure it wasn't sickening at all. However, I didn't fall in love with the love interest (I will not spoil) and I most definitely didn't swoon over him. His character was not to my taste at all but I loved reading about Samantha's views and thoughts about him and his family.
I really liked how much of an easy read this book was, and I didn't want to put it down! I fell in love with, most of, the characters, felt part of the adventure and found out about the world of Samantha Kemi. I would rate this book at 9/10!! If you love books that contain one spoonful of magic, two of adventure, a pinch of royal drama and a generous splash of romance, I would recommend you give this book a try!
(I will not write out the blurb of The Potion Diaries: Royal Tour as it could spoil the ending of the first book)
Now, because I enjoyed the first book so much I couldn't wait to start the second one. However I am only 1/4 of the way through so I can give you all my first impression of The Potion Diaries: Royal Tour.
Already I am so excited for how the plot is going to continue! I am expecting lots more adventure in this one and I am excited to meet new characters along the way.
